The Santa Fe Women’s Ensemble a 13-voice group founded in 1981 will be representing Santa Fe on a singing tour of Spain, September 4 - 17. City Officials Celebrate Same-Sex Marriage Licenses in Santa Fe

On Friday, August 23rd, Mayor Coss, Councilor Patty Bushee and City Attorney Geno Zamora witnessed the marriage of nine same-sex couples exchanging their vows at the Santa Fe County Commission Chambers. Thanks to Judge Sarah Singleton who issued a writ of Mandamus, County Clerk Geraldine Salazar announced that at 2:00 p.m. Friday she would begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex applicants. Hearing the announcement, couples flocked to the Santa Fe County Clerk’s office to get their marriage licenses.

Mayor Coss also served as a witness on two of the marriage licenses. He signed the license for Howard K. Rogers and Jerry D. Permenter, both of Santa Fe and Krista Turner from Albuquerque and Lisa Hunsicker from Denver, Colorado who got married today in a joint wedding with seven other couples. The nine couples were married today by ministers Talitha Arnold and Brandon Johnson of United Church of Santa Fe.

“This is an incredibly emotional day in Santa Fe. I am humbled to think of the lives affected and the thousands of people who will finally gain equal rights. The tide of justice is washing over the State of New Mexico and the United States of America and I am so happy to be able to witness this historic shift.

I want to thank everyone in Santa Fe for their hard work and continued push for what is right and what is just. I want to congratulate all local newlyweds and those planning to marry. I also want to welcome couples getting married to Santa Fe. I am asking our staff to put together a special celebratory package at our convention center and I look forward to weddings there and throughout the community of Santa Fe. This is truly a day to celebrate.”

Mayor David Coss and Councilor Patti Bushee announced on March 19, that they were sponsoring a Resolution expressing support for gay marriage in New Mexico and encouraging County Clerks to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Later, Councilors Chris Calvert and Ronald Trujillo signed on as co-sponsors of the Resolution that was introduced at a City Council meeting on March 27. Resolution 13-44 passed on July 31, 2013.

“Today, marriage law in New Mexico was recognized as gender neutral by the courts,” said Geno Zamora, City Attorney. Our brothers, sisters and neighbors have been found to be equal under our state’s constitution.”

In a written opinion, dated, March 19, 2013, City Attorney Geno Zamora discussed the fact that New Mexico’s statutory definition of marriage is gender-neutral and does not define marriage as between a man and a woman. Nor does New Mexico law prohibit same-sex marriage. Therefore, same-sex couples are capable of contracting within the law and capable of marrying in the State of New Mexico.

Mayor Coss Issues Statement on Doña Ana County Issuing Same-Sex Marriage Licenses

Santa Fe, NM – Statement from Mayor David Coss:

“History was made today in Doña Ana County. Congratulations to County Clerk Lynn Ellins and his staff, to the elected officials, and to all of the citizens of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County. The laws of man have taken an important step forward, but it is the laws of humanity and the inalienable rights of justice and equality that truly triumph.

I’m proud of the work the City of Santa Fe has done to advance the basic civil right of marriage equality. This is not a Northern New Mexico or Southern New Mexico issue; it's an issue for all New Mexicans and for all Americans. I am truly proud of New Mexico today; and of the steps taken towards treating all people equally under the law. This is what's right and it is vital to our progress as a society. Most of all, to the couples getting married, I would like to say: congratulations and best wishes.”

Customer Water Consumption Decreases While the Region Remains in a Severe Drought

As Drought Continues Water Conservation is Still a Priority

Even with the ongoing severe drought and 6% more water customer connections, the City’s total water consumption has dropped by more than 3.5 million gallons a day compared to this time last year. However, recent monsoon rains have not been enough to offset the effects of three years of drought on Santa Fe’s water supply and the City is encouraging all customers to continue to be water wise.

“Despite recent rains and cooler temperatures, our reservoirs are at 32 percent capacity compared to 43 percent capacity this time last year,” said Nick Schiavo, City Public Utilities and Water Division Director. “The precipitation deficits of the last three years are starting to add up and the longer the drought, the longer it will take to recover,” Schiavo stated.

The state and region continue to face long-term water supply challenges. The most recent U.S. Drought Monitor indicates over half of Santa Fe County still remains in exceptional drought, although the outlook until mid-October shows some improvement in the region.

Customers are reminded to adjust their watering schedules to accommodate for recent rains and cooler temperatures. Year-round watering restrictions continue through October 31st with watering limited to after 6: 00 p.m. and before 10:00 a.m.

“We want to thank our residents and businesses.  Santa Fe water customers have made it a priority to save water. Demand is down and participation in our rebate and other programs are up. Santa Fe water customers know they can turn to the city for the tools, resources and programs they need to save money and protect natural resources,” said Laurie Trevizo, Water Conservation Manager.

Santa Fe residents are true water warriors for reducing their demand during these difficult drought conditions.  Businesses and residents continue to demonstrate leadership in water conservation and environmental protection.

Call for Entries: “Common Ground” Annual Art Prize and Exhibit

The City of Santa Fe Arts Commission is pleased to announce a call for entries for “Common Ground,” the City’s annual art prize and exhibition in the Community Gallery. Participation is open to amateur and professional artists aged 18 years or older who reside in Santa Fe County. Framed two-dimensional works and three-dimensional objects are eligible for entry, and all entries will be judged by a committee of Arts Commissioners, artists and arts professionals. The top three entries will receive an honorarium for the use of their artwork, with the Best of Show receiving a $1,000 cash prize and 1st place and 2nd place receiving $500 and $250 respectively. The Best of Show will also be reproduced as the 2013 City of Santa Fe notecard.

The deadline for receipt of entry forms is Monday, September 16, 2013. Due to the popularity of “Common Ground” and limited exhibition space, entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, with up to 80 entries accepted for participation. Entry forms, rules and requirements and complete information about the exhibit and prize are available at the Arts Commission website, www.SantaFeArtsCommission.org, under the “Common Ground: City of Santa Fe Exhibit & Prize” page. The “Common Ground” Exhibit will open at the Community Gallery, located inside the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, on October 25, 2013 and run through November 8, 2013.

“We look forward to receiving a wide variety of work for this year’s “Common Ground” exhibition,” says Julie Bystrom, Project Specialist for the Arts Commission. “This venue always provides a special way to showcase local artists and recognize exceptional talent in Santa Fe’s unique artistic community.”
